New York State requires security guards to complete an 8-hour pre-assignment training course before they can begin working. This course must be completed within 90 days of being hired. The training covers topics such as the role and responsibilities of a security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergency procedures, communication and public relations, and access control.
Security guards must also complete a 16-hour on-the-job training course within 90 days of being hired. This course covers topics such as report writing, use of force, terrorism awareness, and first aid/CPR.
